United States was very close to nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis.
Lessons learned, I think both sides of the US-Soviet Union knew that the destruction of the world was at hand and a kind of diplomatic solution is needed in this case, the Soviets took the missiles out of Cuba to the United States a few months later U.S. the missiles in Turkey.
